I can tell you that overall crime rates really started spiking by the mid 60's (64-65) and
started going up steadily after that.
Compare
1960 : 3 mill crimes / 288 thousand violent
1970 : 8 mill crimes / 740 thousand violent
2014 : 9.5 mill / 1.2 mill violent
Though for 2014 the population was considerably larger so the gap is smaller then it looks.

identical, with non-violent crime in 2014 actually being slightly lower than it was in the 70s
There's also questions of reporting and tracking of criminal activity. I'd hardly say the modern
system is perfect, but it's far more capable of tracking crimes for statistical purposes.
Of course, there's issues of unreported crime, but I have no knowledge in the subject to actually
be able to say one way or another.

I didn't do the math but I could see that being true, yeah.
Still they were considerably lower in the very early 60's and may have been at that level or
lower in the 50's.
My argument was never in defense of anything but the 50's and early 60's.
And honestly it makes sense that things would be good in that time.
We were flush in cash from the war and we hadn't yet wrecked our immigration system yet as we
