It's weird, I always thought that I remembered the fight scenes as fucking sick, but they're really more hit and miss, or hit and filler scene. There are definitely some fights that aren't really very interesting. I remember one that consisted mostly of some fire nation mooks sort of conveniently in the way of every projectile shot at them, not really doing much on the end of fighting themselves. Was pretty disappointing. The significant character vs. significant character fights seemed better put-together, though.

The conflict is much more of a moral grey. Bad guy of the first season is a civil rights activist who wants equal rights for non-benders. He just went Black Panther instead of MLK. Season 2 is a naturalist who wishes to return balance to nature and allow spirits in the world. Season 3 was a freedom fighter, who wished to remove monarchies from power and wished to remove the avatar system allowing one person from controlling so much power. Only season 4 kinda sucked because the bad guy was just another "big bad". Also the beautiful chore graphical fight scenes were reduced to mech battles.

The original had more moral grey just by having relatively good people on the bad guy's side for most of the show and having Aang actually question whether he was doing the right thing instead of just doing whatever the fuck he wanted and having it turn out to be right.

For example, season two is decent, but not nearly as good as Last Airbender, but seasons three and four are phenomenal (in my opinion, better than the average ATLA episode). It has the same Avatar charm, the same kind of tongue-in-cheek humor that the series is known for, and it does get a little dark at times, darker than ATLA did (for example, killing people on-screen in season three and four). I liked the pacing of LoK more, as it was divided into four completely separate seasons, rather than a single story arc, but that's just personal preference. We also get some new bending styles (such as Lavabending).
