Yea was a nice piece except when she went all gay for it, which didn't make sense at all. It's a

My guess is that it has to do with what the spirit represents. Possibly nature, maybe our
emotions related to nature. The girl represents humanity as a whole or as a part, and her smoking
and pills show her as both self destructive and harmful towards the spirit. Their intimacy is
harmful for the spirit, and causes investment only to lead to loss for the girl. It shows that we
get close to something that will only result in us both being hurt. But in the end its okay
because we can always look back at it. I wish I was better at this.

The intimacy doesn't have any buildup though, it just sort of happens... which leads me to think
it's just a vane addition to the story. Especially since it's Japanese. Sort of takes away from
the message to force in that sexual edge when it didn't need it and it wasn't a focus. I like

i dont really think that any of those reasons are explaining why the sexual tension built. i
think it may be that she was really young and got close to this tree spirit. and taking care of
the tree spirit isnt something that would leave a lot of time on your hands. so she bonded
intimately when she had her normal sexual urges somewhere along the way. it just happened. it
wasnt focused on because sexual urges are a part of life. perhaps YOU the viewer put too much
emphasis on it instead of what it was: she wanted to live her life with the tree spirit and
become inseperable in every way. sexuality is only one of the many facets of life. get over it...

I assumed it was more to do with people finding solace and significance in things others do not
care about. People not caring about the shrine is the reason it got destroyed in the first place,
  creating the tree spirit.

Then, the girl, who was is a corporate victim of modern Japanese culture, finds her out in the
rain, and takes her in. She manages to work the tree spirit into everything she loves in life,
even if it's bad for her. It shows that the tree spirit (nature), is not capable of keeping up
  with humanity.

In the end, humanity has to leave nature behind. It is not as durable or adaptable as us, and
we'll eventually outgrow it. No matter how much intimacy we find in nature, no matter how much
fun we have with it. Nature cannot endure what we can, and that's why so few notice it. Everyone
is so far outside of nature that they couldn't recognize it sitting in an empty lot by itself, or
notice its decaying corpse on a subway train.

At this point, we can just recycle it. We have the ability to basically create a limited amount
of breathable air. As technology progresses, we'll need nature less and less.

I suppose it's more reasonable to say that we'll push nature to the side rather than destroy it
completely. It'll be locked out of our cities, where it cannot survive.

I thought that except that nature actually does endure, and in fact evolves and changes to endure
anything, whereas humans are the ones falling behind and saying out, like how she was committed
to cigarettes and pills. The spirit died, but became a tree as a way of showing her that her
single life isn't the end of here existence, and that she'll keep on going even after death, and
