Different things happen for different reasons, clotting happens which would stop blood loss to a
certain extent.
Worth noting: don't think this life is one of many, guy might of been a deaf mute but his

Complications can happen even with the most routine operations.
Blood transfusions aren't 100% safe.
Despite our best efforts to make the needles and tubing safe, they can still cause issues.
Dude could have also had a blood-related issue at the time as well.
He could have been losing blood, or had anaemia, or many other issues, which can also lead to
massive complications.
Could have even been infected by the needle insertion, and due to being older, just gave-in.
Not to mention the fact the father was willing to give everything to save his daughter, it can
lead to a person on the edge of life giving in even if they could survive. They don't fight
because it could save the person they love. Fighting for survival would be like attacking your
own.
A persons mood can heavily influence survival when ill. (and general susceptibility to illness
and maximum age, being a pessimist literally cuts years off your life)
