Seriously though I think it has to do with the homogeneity of the society. There's no foreigners
really and everyone pretty much looks the same, so being "weird" is a means of having a
differential identity. When you have a significant number of people who accept and display their
quirks it kind of makes the more deviant behaviors socially acceptable.
That's my half-baked hypothesis anyway.

May be anti-trump but like many anti-trump memes it has the opposite affect on some people
(myself included). I love it.
Their mythos isn't that strange, just look at pagan/greek/norse mythology for a western
comparison. And yes, pretty much any culture will view other cultures as "weird" but that's
somewhat irrelevant. My point is about explaining why Japanese are especially weird from an
international standpoint. Only in Japan is a maid cafe a social norm, for instance.
You could attempt to apply the same reasoning for a country like China but it just doesn't pan
out, their society is just too conformist. Seems Japan has struck some kind of balance.
