AS3 really started to come into it's own around the time they revised the audio method in flash player 10 (exposed access to more low-level API content, individual audio samples could be generated bit by bit) they kept adding more content including hardware acceleration, but thats more on the player side. I don't get the hate for flash player personally, I keep it updated and have had zero issues. I am a flash animator though so I might be a bit biased. the Java runtime enviroment and adobe air can burn in hell tho.
