the statue of liberty was a gift to USA from france in 1886 to celebrate 100 years of the
country's independence. usa built the base, france the actual statue. funny thing is that usa
really didnt even want the thing but were forced to reluctantly accept it after pressure from the
french. and today it has become the symbol of the country, the people alive in 1886 would never
have guessed.
