How was this received when it came out? I understand the cultural perspective, these being heroes
to them. It seems that any side that makes a habit of martyrdom loses more than they gain.
Archetypal cool/loved characters, well produced, but carrying an alien message. Perhaps as noble
sacrifice, but more certainly suicide with collateral.

This takes it out of perspective.
The entire thing was about how pointless the war was and how many great and noble minds must've
been lost during the fighting.
If I remember correctly, the kamikaze pilot there was a rocket scientist before joining the war
effort. The whole film isn't about evoking honor or hailing sacrifice, but feeling remorse for
loss of so many young souls.

In WWII, Japan was losing more pilots to traditional methods just because they got shot down
often. The only real difference here is that the pilots knew beforehand that they would die.
