  It originates from a shooter style game, but quite honestly, it is a sub-par series flooded with
  art and character designs that look to be drawn by a Japanese infant. It tends to impress those
  ignorant of shmups with the slow moving "curtain shooter" style of gameplay, but anyone who has
  played shmups in the past can recognize the gameplay as something thrown together by an amateur.
  In Japan it really is just popular because it is popular. What started as a fad, now is some sort
  of Rite of Passage for artists over there to draw fan-art of the various characters from the
  series. If you REALLY want attention, you throw together a fan animation, complete with sung
  lyrics.
  Most "weeaboos" just like it because they perceive that Japan thinks it is cool, so of course
  they just jump on it. And that is why this bullshit floods /f/ constantly.

  It was probably also the first danmaku game that introduced grazing, so it isn't all copypasta.

  I'll admit to being a gigantic faggot and trying it because it seemed ridiculously popular and I
  wanted to understand the flashes and memes being spouted around here occasionally. I found myself
  playing my first bullet hell shooter, and I enjoyed it.

  Of course, nothing is stopping me from going out and playing something better except for pure
  faggotry. Even so, I continue to play the games.
