you need converts (blue guys) or it doesn't do anything.
if you have converts, you can click on them and they will run out on the field with explosives
strapped on their chest. click on them and they'll blow up and kill everything nearby

Not random deaths. Upkeep.
If you don't have enough money to pay for your guys at the beginning of a turn, they will all die
at the end of the turn, even if you made enough during the turn to pay for them at the end.
