Japanese religion is Shintoism, which has many animistic properties. They have many minor "Gods"
which are basically more powerful spirits. There are river gods, mountain gods, tree gods, etc.
She's some sort of small god, and the shrine she lives in is being torn down for construction.
She's probably a tree god, since it seems to focus on that tree being cut down, she becomes a
tree later, etc.
She's slowly dying, either as more of the shrine is destroyed, or just because her tree is dead
and she's running on borrowed time. The girl buries her in the mountain wilderness, and she
regrows into another holy tree.
