  Why don't you use discord?
  >Well because 1% of the community has a crazy fetish discord server and it scares me!

  k....

  >doesnt cover how its a massive data collection scheme
  >doesnt cover how the program is propped up by investors
  >doesnt cover how the program scans your entire computer before starting
  >doesnt cover why the program still runs features that you turn off
  >doesnt cover how paid features ignores user settings (gif emotes play when unfocused)
  >doesnt cover how the devs are cub loving furries
  >doesnt cover how the devs introduced two features in an attempt to get photos of peoples IDs
(manage a bot or say youre underage)
  >doesnt cover how the program paywalls useless features to trick kids into giving them money
  >doesnt cover how the nitro payments will never be able to support the program and it would go
under overnight if the investors pulled
  >doesnt cover how all the bot provide joke features in exchange for complete logs of your server
to the bot dev without telling you
Theres better reason to not use discord than fetish servers but even what I posted isnt the worst
part. Its the common user that really takes the cake on why you shouldnt use this piece of shit.
And yes I know other programs do this shit too but its still a valid criticism.

scans your entire computer before starting
Source? Because not even my antivirus can scan my entire computer in the 15 seconds it takes
  discord to load up

That part was mainly a joke, occasionally after not running it for a couple days the start-up
will take awhile even if theres no update. It does constantly scan and creates a list of all
processes, and the mobile app will connect to a facebook app even if neither are synced with each
other. Im pretty sure this violates the EU's GDPR. I wouldnt be surprised if it indexes all your
files while its running but does a quick scan on startup to check for new or updated files.
Though it has to be scanning something because a program I haven't ran for months occasionally
appears in the "recently games" despite me having that shit turned off and never running it when
discord was on. Hell, its buried in some random folders far away from common game directories.

Because they censor and they support a hate group called "black lives matter" (if you think it
isn't a front for extremists you haven't been paying attention).

kek @ the video in the flash tho

it does monitor your running processes in order to broadcast what gaym your gayming to your
  friends.
i don't trust it to not store what it sees on their servers. there's no reason to not assume they
scan your files and store hashes of them in their tracking database.
you can't even send file transfers to a friend over 8 MiB because they want to save a permanent
copy on their server, even if your friend is online and it's a private message.

i recommend running discord in your browser. then it's sandboxed and can't scan your computer.
just get a separate browser for discord and you're good.

Yes, and you have a source for this?
Seriously, that's kind of fucking scary and if I can verify that I'm probs gotta uninstall

I'm not really tech savy, but why doesn't someone make an open source version of discord? surely
it would lap up the market share.

Money. Like the article says, discord has lotsa money from investment capital behind it. Open
source isn't that easy to monetize.
Then you got the issue of server hosting, there are enough open source programs allowing you to
host your own shit like mumble, but casuals think that's too difficult.
Also userbase, you have no guarantee that people will use your program, that's why shit like
skype is so popular despite being trash.

Theres an easy answer to this: If the end user has to do more than run the program and touch a
single settings menu they are more inclined to use an alternative program that is easier to use.
Using an open source chat program and hosting your own server might be beneficial between close
friends who are more eager to stay connected to one another but for servers that are just large
swarms of people who dont even know each other, which is the majority of how users use discord,
this wouldnt make any sense and coordinating its set-up would drive people away. Good luck
getting teenagers to use IRC, which at the end of the day is what all these programs are just
with an updated GUI and some extra features (image embedding, VoIP, and busted videochat)

ty for the answers. I guess it just comes down to user laziness at the end of the day, they'll
  take the easiest route.

There are open source alternatives that are slightly different, like Riot and Mattermost. And
open source voice chat alternatives like Mumble.
But they're a pain in the ass to set up, don't have high quality servers, and don't iterate on
  the design rapidly.
Discord isn't necessarily bad software, but the community is atrocious and most channels I try to
go to are filled with memes and emoji react spam.
Fun fact: Discord copied most of its UI from Slack, which an office productivity chat tool, and
the company that made Slack was originally working on web-based MMOs.

And that's because of what these anons say:

If it's open source, nothing is preventing anybody from making a version with FUCK TRANNIES rules.
