Its poetic that as flash was declining so did the internet turn to shit. >>3460233 >Flash is older than me, feels weird man. Zoomers can have only a look back we lived it. There was a internet culture back then. since most all people watched the same things and knew about them. We did what we wanted to do. it was wild. Then social media happened and put a end to it all. Fuck the internet was not your zoomer safe space you can get whatever porn, gore brutality or random Hitler and everyone was Ok with that. >> [_] Anonymous 02/16/21(Tue)13:22:50 No.3460252 >>3460230 im 25 today >> [_] Anonymous 02/16/21(Tue)13:29:36 No.3460253 >>3460252 Time flies. >> [_] Anonymous 02/16/21(Tue)13:31:09 No.3460254 >>3460252 happy birthday anon! >> [_] Anonymous 02/16/21(Tue)15:13:21 No.3460258 >>3460249 >zoomer >Using a derivative based off a viral marketing forced meme I find irony here. BTW, what killed the internet was the consolation. We saw what happens to any market that isn't regulated to stop consolation happen with the internet over a 20 year span where a few companies now control a good chunk of the market and a monopoly is inevitable. >> [_] Anonymous 02/16/21(Tue)16:22:02 No.3460264 >>3460258 not him but interesting theory. you reckon that by having a free and open internet we've by extension allowed the corps free and open reign to take over it all? While I agree they've probably grown too large I don't think there's anything stopping new startups and/or niche/small sites from existing. They do still exist if they're worth a damn, just a little harder to find when the internet is so saturated. I don't think we can just say they're too large and they need to stop if we've allowed them to get to where they are, only solution if we want to kill them is to stop using them. >> [_] Anonymous 02/16/21(Tue)17:05:18 No.3460266 >>3460264 The issue is if you don't set some boundaries on how much can be owned, the sites that accumulate some power will use that to consolidate more power. A perfect example of this that combines both the internet and the flaws of capitalism was Amazon buying out Zappos, a shoe and clothing retailer. Amazon wanted to buy out Zappos earlier but they said no. So Amazon engaged in aggressive predatory pricing to undercut Zappos and cause them to lose so much money that they had no choice but to be bought out by Amazon. Thus, Amazon controls a much larger part of that market because of their actions. Which strong regulation would have stopped. Starts ups can exist, but if they prove to be successful, you'll have companies like Amazon buy them out. To save the internet from this consolidation, you need what would be the equivalent of a massive trust busting of the various companies and websites and then regulations to keep them from re-consolidating. >> [_] Anonymous 02/16/21(Tue)17:12:23 No.3460267 >>3460264 there absolutely are things which can stop small sites from existing, be it the fact these corporations own a lot of the internet infrastructure, not to talk about standards like HTML which google has been running down to sabotage non-chrome browsers for a long time, app stores which google and apple own 100% and can absolutely kick you out, and search engines - google absolutely prioritizes their own services over others. the recent case of uceprotect and VC has shown how difficult big companies make it to host your own mail - you WILL have problems trying to send mail from a server which isn't google's or microsoft's. even digitalocean recommends paying for g suite instead of selfhosting mail, and they're a fucking hosting company. monopolies and oligopolies exist, and they use their power constantly. >> [_] Anonymous 02/16/21(Tue)17:59:11 No.3460269 I gotta be honest with you guys. I'm a newfag(summerfag to be more precise). I only came here a few months ago. I'm not an election tourist, I'm actually interested in old 4chan culture. So I power-lurked, by reading all the archives. Now, even tho by join-date I'm newer than a newfag, by actual knowledge, I may as well be an originalfag. I guess that "You're here forever" can sometimes, also extend to the past. Anyway, what I wanted to say is that everytime I hear what awesome shit you did back in the day, even tho I wasn't there, I feel, idk, kinda nostalgic. It also makes me wish those days were back. >> [_] Anonymous 02/16/21(Tue)18:14:23 No.3460273 >>3460269 To key thing to know is during the 'golden age' of 4chan, memes were contextual to events and came and went. As opposed to the redditchan era where we all know where meme are considered the context. It's the big reason why original content is dead because everything is just a rehash of pepe or wojak. When in better years, they'd both be long gone in favor of new content. The blame for this is on Rape Ape's laissez faire approach towards moderation. Since one of the secret successes of 4chan was when something became to large and cancerous, the mods would step in to crack down on it and force people to move onto new content. These days that doesn't happen so cancer is allowed to grow. Worse yet, newfags who don't bother to lurk or learn their history just assume that's how it always been. So they'll actually claim shit like pepe and wojak are a part of 4chan culture, as opposed to what they really are, an affront to it. >> [_] Anonymous 02/16/21(Tue)20:03:04 No.3460276 >>3460273 >The blame for this is on Rape Ape's laissez faire approach towards moderation >implying mods weren't way more lax before >> [_] Anonymous 02/16/21(Tue)21:24:44 No.3460278 >>3460276 >What are word filters. >What was moot removing posts with doubles from broads from /v/ to crack down on dubs. >What were mods like modcat who actually spoke to the community and encouraged self policing and |
