But I can’t even believe that this newsreel is showing Afghanistan. It seems that this is the
Tajik or Uzbek SSR. And this is really coold compared to what capitalists and Taliban (banned in

You could also say that the US did a lot to modernize the few major cities, but just like the
Islamic Republic, the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan was wildly unpopular throughout the rest
of the country and was never really supposed to be a strong government considering how quickly it
fell the second the USSR left. The USSR was an atheist state with doesn't really mesh well with
Afghans, so its hard to believe the DRA would stand even without US/Pakistani/Saudi aid to rebels.
