I remember a game that's been posted here where the entire screen was yellow boxes. Each was a
progress bar that took resources to complete but would upgrade skills allowing you to tackle
  bigger boxes.

Great! Because I wasn't sure as there are quite some games in that specific genre, but this was
the one that came to mind first.

Why does this not work? Not even in the flash projector?

cavestory.swf works its just awfully slow on some computers. I was playing it earlier today and
  got to Arthurs room.

Is it a proper port of the full game? i.e. not a demake

I can't think of a good reason it would run slowly, way more demanding games exist that use
bitmapdata and synthetic sound. Unless maybe if it uses some lazy embedded x86 emulation system.

...also can't get it to run, people on dagobah said it requires an obsolete FP projector (up to
version 11) ... ain't running shit on an a version with million security holes until I can
  decrypt and check it's legit

>> [_] Anonymous 10/07/23(Sat)10:07:07 No.3500192

Looks like it's just the nxengine C port cross-compiled to flash and encrypted with DoSWF, don't
  know why.

Haven't played the original in a while but I can tell some the colors are way off, also sounds
like they also reduced the number of audio channels. Could check the music files in pxtone, see
if they made changes to those or just the sound engine.

I know from memory that I played through the flash port once.
It even has all 3 secret weapon tradings and the last dungeon.
So it wouldn't be a demake I think.
It also doesn't go past the loading screen for me in browser.
Idk what changed, maybe it loads a script file from a server that's now down? A lot of swfs do
  that.
Also calm your tits, older flash versions aren't that unsecure and this isn't a fucking virus.
I don't remember needing an older flash version, not older than what they released back then. And
why would you need a projector? That old flash version is just what you need to build a projector.
I definitely didn't use a .exe but the swf file.

  >why would you need a projector?
Sorry, I meant the standalone player not a browser plugin or the swf->exe projection. It's true
that it checks what address you're loading it from and does some api call. I assume the old flash
player version lets it go through (and lets you play because it 404s) while a new one instantly
hangs due to updated security measures.

The debug version says before hanging: "This API cannot accept shared ByteArrays." Giving an
external api access to shared memory is indeed something to be wary of. I think the online checks
could be removed so the game will run on all versions. Also it removes the threat of the api
domain being re-registered and made to listen to calls that old games are making, and serving
  them viruses.

  >Also calm your tits, older flash versions aren't that unsecure
Dude, even NEWER versions frequently got 9+ CVSS up until EOL:
  https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-list/vendor_id-53/product_id-6761/

Tons of documented vulnerabilities and I'm sure there's still a black market for legacy FP
exploits since lots of people even on /f/ are using versions below 20. Just like WinXP is still
targeted by malware authors because random hospitals in India use it. One can never bee too safe.
I personally check every swf that's 10 years or younger for obfuscated code and suspicious web
  requests.
