When first started browsing /f/, I learned to swfchan within a week, so I'd imagine only
"first-dayers" or those who post and leave have never heard of it.

Ages ago I found out about swfchan before even knowing about /f/
Was /f/ ever relevant during the height of the flash scene?
>> [_] Anonymous 06/04/24(Tue)17:37:18 No.3508523
>>3508520
Depends on what you call "relevant", but yes.
People tended to stay encapsuled in their initial communities and small world like newgrounds or
dagobah, but everywhere people were at least aware of the existance of 4chan and it's flash board.
Even creators (who weren't complete arse) sometimes made themselves tripcodes to post here, as
they likely also browsed other board on 4chan, multi board browsing wasn't uncommon in during the
early to mid era. Famously Zone didn't even care about (or maybe even himself) posted his flashes
here all the time.
As in those days /f/ still had a lot of active OC creators, it was worth visiting for those alone
and an automatic archive crawler didn't exist (to my knowledge) which made lurking in different
places very worthwhile.
/f/ was comprised of a lot of different people with ears and eyes all across the flash community
or even larger internet, so it was a kind off allstar show of what was going on in every corner
of the web.
But certainly if you were a dedicated hardcore creator you'd rather have your home based
elsewhere, were accounts and daily recommendations made it easier for you to accumulate clout
and also 7chan's flash board, if styled differently like a regular board, rivaled /f/ in its
popularity during that era.
Rules 1&2 still provided valuable cover in the early internet era, so not every normie and their
exploding van grandma yet knew of 4chan and it's many board which had the nice effect of sparing
the people of this land the every annoying avatarfagging and flamewars found in every other
community. /f/ was no drama (well nearly none) and just flash consumption at its finest.
To deny /f/ relevancy would only prove to further one's naivety of being confounded to your own
ass namefag riddled forum with no regard to the wider picture.

Thanks for the history lesson anon. I would love to read more of this.
Where do you think all that talent went? I'm kinda lost nowadays. What happened with all that
universe of flash content creators?

But I can only speculate: A lot of them went to school and got jobs
A lot of flash groups fell apart before the end of flash; they either moved on to other things or
flash animations werent getting the same attention because youtube and mobile were getting a much
bigger draw; many of the time, for worthless shit, with a quarter of the effort involved. Most of
them just moved onto newer things.
I dont know what happened to clairvoyance of nightmare city fame.
Muzie.co.jp ended in 2017 after another name change as "BIG UP! FREE", then closed
403 the band that made the music used in nightmare city is still around making music at
https://403.team-7.net/
king-soukutu.com brought back their web games running in ruffle recently, so you can play
RokkuChan again.
Nekogames moved onto mobile devices with Finger10, which plays a lot like cursor10
Nanaca Crash had a mobile version for phones but I cant find it anymore. A lot of flash websites
on yahoo.co.jp ate shit when yahoo.co.jp closed.
Not many people care about Brokensaints.com but Brooke Burgress became a dad not long ago, but
before that Brokensaints got onto DVD and didnt sell enough to break even; so, so much for that.
Misteroo from Disasterlabs, got a job. A lot of them "got jobs".
A lot of newgrounds animators went to college, and also "got jobs"
Kirbopher who was never notable, realized he was much better at voice acting than flash
animating, and "got a job"
When people arent making money off the medium they tend to close and move on too. I know a
handful of former youtube animators in recent memory who just decided one day it wasnt for them,
without an elaborate explanation as to why. A lot of these departures had very little to do with
flash ending specifically. It was mostly things like being unable to monetize, and the level of
effort involved for projects costing more money and time; as well as getting a job.
So there u go.

Flash content creators went to the Unity engine to make games for phones, and story tellers went
to ...still Flash.
It's just called Adobe Animator now and they don't export it to swf any more but a video.

>It's just called Adobe Animator
*Adobe Animate. Says in the wiki article "Flash (.swf) and AIR (.air) formats are still
officially supported" but I wonder if that's outdated information. I think AIR is no longer in
development, but I guess it's possible in theory they still support exporting to the formats.

Adobe Animate is still swf + as3 by default. I don't understand how Adobe is still supporting a
dead market, but it's nice to see.

Good to hear. I think SWF can be imported into other Adobe programs like Affect Effects? So it's
not about any market, it's a tool used in making movies. And AS3 is powerful, if they have it why
not just keep having it to improve the tool?
