I watched this series all the way through both Clannad & Clannad: After Story, and I must say
that Clannad: After Story made me so sad I cried, but at the end when the miracle had happened it

Interpretation for realistic people.
The 'hopeful' interpretation is that when Ushio dies in the illusionary world, she is 'reborn'
into the 'real' world and causes time to skip back a bit into a different history where nobody
dies and end-credit befitting happiness ensues.
