To provide a little background.
Saban (the same company responsible for Power Rangers) and Dic were in a bidding war to get the
American rights to Sailor Moon. Saban was raking in the big bucks from shows like Power Rangers
by reediting Japanese versions to fit an American viewing audience. Anime was gaining mainstream
popularity in the mid '90s but it was far from a sure fire hit. Dic felt it was worth the risk.
Both companies were asked to produce a pilot. Saban produced what we see in this video where Dic
produced re-dubbing of an existing episode. The dubbing tested better with audiences and was
cheaper to make. Dic was awarded the contract to translate and dub the first 20 or so episodes
and the rest is history.
