Even if they don't have to respond to the people who didn't pay, what about the neighbour who
did? They just sat there and waited until the fire caught onto his property before they responded.
Its kind of like hiring a bodyguard, then having a crazed gunman stand next to you, and the
bodyguard refuses to do anything until the gunman opens fire on you.
>> [_] Anonymous 10/06/10(Wed)19:51 No.1390024
interesting thing about this story is the fire department themselves fought against the 75 dollar
fee. The family involved had simply forgotten to pay. The department themselves suggested a lot
of ways to make sure no one was in this situation including increasing a tax by only 3 dollars.
The municipal government in the area outright refused.

Neighbor could have greatly avoided the fire spreading to his house by soaking his yard and house
in water from his hose.

It's upheld by the city, unfortunately federal government doesn't own a nation-wide fire
department. It's up to your city or county to decide how to fund their fire departments, so no,
it doesn't come from the taxes. He dodged the fee banking that his house would never burn down
and lolirony hit him and people raged.

And lets suppose the neighbour isn't there at the time, or the fire is already getting so out of
control it becomes a risk to themselves? They essentially paid their due, to have the fire
department knowingly allow a fire to spread onto their property. All in the name of essentially
flipping somebody the bird over performing their duties for someone who paid up. Priorities
straight fucked-up there.

Nowhere. I was merely stating that the neighbor didn't have to worry as much as the person I was
replying implied. There are things they could have done to reduce any risk of the fire taking
hold of their house as well.

"It wasn't until fire spread to a neighours property, that anyone would respond"
Its fire, bitch. If it is on fire, it is already fucking damaged. The fact remains that even if
they acted quickly, they still willingly and deliberately allowed it to cause damage to
somebodies property, who paid the fee.
"Well gee, at least they put it out after it only blackened one end of the house" nothing. I
don't give a shit if all that got burned was the fringe of the lawn. Somebody paid their due, and
was put in second-place to flipping somebody the bird.

You haven't ever been to a rural area, have you. Most people yards are significantly larger than
suburbia, and a field is significantly larger than a yard.

I don't really think that's an issue. I mean it's hard to put out a fire that's not there yet.
They probably don't have access to retardants and the like. It's more the neighbor's fault for
being a dumbass and not paying the fee. However, I gather that it's not a required law to pay the
fee so this is the only enforcement they have.

I saw this on the news. The elderly couple who'se house burned hadn't received their retirement
checks, yet, when the payment came due. They were waiting on thier check in order to pay the fee,
which they always did. What that town in Tennessee is illegal under US Federal law and you can
bet that whole county's going to be dragged into a civil suit because of this. I hope the old
couple wins, too!

while true of those responsible to law whats in question here isn't that.
it's whether this is an appropriate means of enforcement, and while it sounds good on paper, I
don't think it would last long to burn peoples houses down because they didn't pay 75$ a month to
the state.

If people knew the fire department would come to the rescue of their homes regardless of whether
or not they paid the fee, then very few people would, and then the system would be underfunded
and hurt.
The reality is, we can never just assume that big nanny government will take care of us.
Do you think the first fire departments where free enterprises? Think again, they didn't used to
call them companies for nothing.

>> [_] Anonymous 10/06/10(Wed)22:22 No.1390133
I think we can all agree this is a worst case scenario. Ideally, the city would have had fully
incorporated the area into the protection of the rural areas. If they chose to levy a fee,
enforcement should have gone beyond letting property burn, be it with a heavy fine or even jail
time. This was not the way to handle the situation, but all parties involved did what they were
supposed to. The FD was not supposed to put out the fire, and the owners were supposed to have
paid their fee. The laws should be changed, but guess who's job that is. It's not the fireman's.

Sooooooo...
If I don't pay the fee, the 911 emergency operator will simply hang up on me.
If I don't pay a fee, the police will just watch as I get raped in the street.
If I don't pay a fee, even a passing good Samaritan will leave me to bleed to death.
That is where absurd laws like this will turn up. That is not to say that public services should
not be paid...by all means, they should, for they are underfunded as is...but they should be
regulated through taxes, not by subscription. If taxes were raised for that purpose, then I would
have no problem paying the higher taxes.
