  Strictly speaking, that's closer to the original name, anyway. Originally it's ブルマ (buruma), a
  transliteration of bloomer (as in athletic shorts). The original translators either didn't
  realize this, or didn't want to bother explaining, so over here it became Bulma, which is
  meaningless.

  (Note: This joke was continued later in the series with the edition of Trunks and Bra, her
  children. Yeah, Toriyama has an odd naming sense. But DB was originally a comedy series, so what
  can you do?)
