Well, obviously because of the sheer impracticality of having a five light year long pole. So
many things could go wrong it's not even funny, and trying to fix it would require traveling
along the entire 5 light year length, which would take far longer than five years to do because
you need to check everything to ensure there are no cracks or things which may cause it to
separate.

The reason the rod wouldn't work is because it's made up of molecules. We take it for granted
that when we push on one end of a rigid object, the other end moves at the same time. This works
because it's a chain reaction of molecules pushing on other molecules. It happens nearly
instantaneously as there are relatively few molecules involved.
If you had a 5LY steel rod on the other hand, it would take longer for the energy from the near
end to travel to the far end -- the kinetic energy would travel as a pressure wave much slower
than the speed of light. It's unlikely the signal would arrive at all since the energy would
quickly be lost to friction.

Also, this flash forgot to mention that you have to fill the blender with hydrogen gas to fill in
the missing hydrogen atoms at the end of the chain. You can achieve this by mixing some granular
pool chlorine and motor brake fluid in the blender beforehand.
