The Tanuki suit does not come from the real life Tanuki (raccoon dog), but from they mythological
Tanuki (trickster youkai).
Since, you know, real life tanuki don't wear leaves on their heads (which is why the Tanuki suit
powerup takes the form of a leaf) or fly or transform (the Tanuki suit can make Mario disguise
himself as a statue).
