Yeah, I had a couple of those. Either they've got him/her on some good meds or s/he's a real
trooper. The skin above the abscess is incredibly sensitive to pressure and when it gets that
bad, the underlying tissues do as well. I literally chewed the skin off my knuckles one time when
they were cutting me open.
There's very little blood circulation in the skin above the abscess, so local anesthetic doesn't
help much or at all.

It's not. The area around an abscess is massively inflamed, so it's all very sensitive and pain
is amplified by a factor of 3. If the patient isn't knocked out they're in complete agony. Only
thing I can imagine hurting worse is debriding, which they sometimes have to to on the inside
anyway.
