Because of binding energy, dipshit. Protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom generally have
less mass than they would if they were free particles, because that binding energy takes away
from their measured mass. That's how relativity affects this. Here's a link with some pretty

Pay particular attention to the graph showing the binding energy per nucleon, because that
explains exactly how fission and fusion can release energy.
