I think the difference is somewhat related to the "uncanny valley." Most furry art is people with
animal features, and the animal features are emphasized both by the artist and through natural
contrast with what the viewer expects a person to look like. MLP has ponies with human features,
so it's the human qualities that are emphasized and people relate to that. Also, MLP is so
stylized that they hardly seem like horses at all. The general shape is there, but that's about
it.
