Crate keys can only be acquired with irl money ($2.50 each) and are thus valued high on the TF2
"trading market". They're used to unlock crates which contain mostly junk, but some hats and
other fancy shit, and are (I think) the only way to get unusual hats with spiffy effects.
tl;dr, guy traded a hat for two keys to mystery prizes and got garbage.
