Well Touhou isn't a anime, but a doujin game with a massive fan base.
But that point is more than true for every guy I've met that's into anime.

It's saturated onlone with fan art to the point where people get into it without knowing what the
fuck it is, and when they find out what it is they don't expect it.
Ex: the "what the fuck is homestuck?" effect.
