it depends on the definition of broken, if the hard disk is smashed to pieces there isn't much
chance of recovery without specialist tools - if its a software issue or a firmware issue there
is still a possibility that you can recover data from it. If a hard drive crashes and fails
there's a possibility that you can recover SOME data from it, but its not likely that you will
get all of it back
