Once upon a time, back in the early 1990s, the Sega Mega Drive was released. And there, Sonic
made his debut. In an era where games meant 'rooms' and grinding, Sonic proved himself to be
faster than his competitors.
But that was then - this is now.
The Sega Mega Drive ran on a Motorola 68000 processor clocking at 7.67 MHz. It worked on 64kB
work RAM (68000), 64kB video RAM and 8kB work RAM (Z80). Less than a megabyte of RAM.
On that, Sonic was the fastest.
Times have changed. Today, the SEGA consoles have been discontinued, and their main competitor,
Nintendo, has the Wii. It's CPU: an IBM PowerPC "Espresso" reportedly clocked at 1.24 GHz and
backed with a GPU and 2 GB total, consisting of four 512 MB DDR3-1600 DRAM chips at 12.8 GB/s
total bandwidth.
Compared to this, Sonic is slow.
This game is the dream of Sonic, who wishes to be fast again. But time goes on. And Sonic will be
that old-timer who once was a somebody, a contenda.
