Anime = Higurasi no Naku Koro ni.
And is likely to be the most EPIC thing you'll likely ever gonna see. Save the las OVA which is
just bad, and Studio Deen should FEEL BAD too!
OTOH: Good luck finding anything to top it, Mirai Nikki (a.k.a The Future Diary), perhaps comes
closest, but. Takeshi Kitanos' Battle Royal would likely be closer still, but thats a live action
Movie.

Umineko (a.k.a When the Seagulls Cry) BTW Higurashi (When the Cicadas Cry) Were originally done
by 07th Expansion as Visual Novels for the PC, which were latter picked up and animated by Studio
Deen.
You only need to deal with:
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Question Arc)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai (Answer Arc) and,
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei (Rika Arc)
Kira is a cheep cash grab Fan Service laden cesspool of filth, and adds absolutely nothing kinda
like Ops post, but at least with some charm!

Really though don't let the thought of Guro throw you off. Granted Higurashi IS EXTREMELY
VIOLENT! Its hardly grotesque. The story and the thought behind it all really balances it all out
nicely. And your left with One of the best Anime's ever. If on the other hand you did like Guro
then Umineko might be a better choice, its almost like the antitheses of Higurashi. i.e. More
gore, and less story as to why.
