That's called hiding your power level, and the irony of it all is that the "other people you
know" are probably enforcing this principle themselves, given that you probably know people with
similar tastes and viewpoints to yours.
I think 'best friend' is a designation that you can only apply to people you can truly share
with, without fear.

But seriously, while you shouldn't go out shouting to everyone something like "Guys I'm listening
to Siouxsie and The Banshees!" you shouldn't hide it, either. Music conversation comes up, tell
them what you like. I'm sure you have at least one friend who listens to someone you find shitty
or stupid, like Katy Perry.
People need to stop looking at music like it's a phase or is the only way to determine your own
personality.
Good music is good music. If you like it it only means you think it's good.
