Russia was massing an army near the german border and making crazy demands of germany, it was
only a matter of time before they invaded, hitler smartly tried to pre-emptivly attack in the
hopes of gaining some ground/resources. (and he did, he gained a good position in stalingrad that
he knew stalin would obsess over, and while he was not able to capture the russian oil, he at
least made it unusable to the russians)
It was really either attack russia and try to fight them in russia, or wait and try to fight them
in germany. Hitler opted for the one that theoretically leads to fewer german civilian casualties.
The plan was to buy time untill england could be defeated then focus all efforts on russia, but
that didnt pan out due to hitler having a short temper that was exploited by chirchill when he
manipulated hitler into bombing london civilians in retaliation to the indiscriminate bombing of
berlin civilians, saving his RAF airbases.
