"explosives" is a very general term. Lots of materials have the capability of some form of
explosion. TNT was originally the most common, now C4 has claimed the spot due to its non
volatile state. However, you can still get explosions from things like gunpowder, flammable
liquids, flammable gasses, or sometimes just by mixing certain liquid chemical components
together.
Any explosion happens when too much energy is exerted too quickly into too small an area. A
nuclear device is just another way of doing this. Technically, when you hear your lightbulb "pop"
when it dies, that's an explosion, albeit a very tiny one.
