I've done similar too. Spent AGES trying to save an awesome life-time collection of porn.
One time I took the platters out of one drive and put them into another to try and get access to
it. Managed to get what I wanted.

My old computer's motherboard got fried, too.
The hard drive was still fine and dandy, so I just physically placed it in my new computer.
Then the whole thing got too warm inside and I had to place a second cooling fan in there.
All in all though, the mission was a grand success.
....and yes, all my porn was saved.
