No, it isn't a metaphor for homosexuality at all considering that this story is between a male
and female character. The only way you could view this as a metaphor for gay love is to
completely disregard the sex of the main characters.

but the metaphor works for any two people who love one another and the society says that that
love is wrong. be it interracial, homosexual, whatever. if you look at some of the arguments that
are being laid out in america about same sex legal marrage (or whatever they want to call it) you
will see that the same arguments were used 40 years ago about interracial marrage/relationships.
