You saw them try to hit him and how that just wasn't working because of his dodges. He wasn't
hitting them, so they just let him fuck around and be annoying because there wasn't anything else
they could do.
The lever closes the gate and makes it so you have to go around in a long detour full to the brim
with weak enemies. In Dark Souls, even the weakest enemies can fuck you up if you're not paying
attention and dodging/blocking.

They're ignoring him because they can barely damage him with the shit equipment they have at soul
levels this low due to his 99 humanity.
And the lever gives a bit of invincibility when you pull it if timed correctly, he's just doing
that to piss them off even further.
