It's fanbase is almost entirely 15 year old dub-junkies and tumblr crusaders. I don't think those
people are familiar enough with anime to even qualify it as overrated.

it has potential but it could flop pretty easily too if the plot starts pulling too much bullshit
and empowering eren everytime he encounters a new enemy just cuz he's the MC.
