You need to setup your game and your soundcard driver software properly.
Have game render the sound in full surround and put your sound card in headphone mode. It will do
a proper conversion and give you good audio positionning.
Fuck 5.1 headsets, they're crap for this because your game and your soundcard think you're using
5.1 speakers.
