Once you beat the boss in an area, you can visit the next.
Walk off the map to the world map.

I've got half my map uncovered, and I'm still getting rekt by damn near everything.
At the fifth area, there are shops where you can buy new swords, armor and spells, and add
enchantments to your swords and armor.
But that shit's expensive.
In the sixth area, there's a shrine where you can pay to level up your endurance.
There's also a hidden area at the oasis where you can hire a partner for 100g.
He's not too weak, but he's really random with his attacks.

Ginormo Sword is one of the grindiest games I've ever played.
Beat it in the end though. Felt good.
