Not useless if they update the firmware,
copiers could very easily operate without a lid if they ignore the solid black that isn't on the
paper

the scanner uses the reflective side on the lid to reflect the light back into the photosensor.
It depends on what printer you have if it is going to be black or white or cropped, mostly it
does automatic size on the document because of edge detection. If you set a custom size, say
letter, and placed it properly it would scan, not perfectly, but it would be able to replicate a
shitty page.
