back in the day, US had training mission where they sent soldiers into the epicenter of nuclear
explosion with almost no intel on how severe amounts of radiation can damage human body
most of them died
for the science
good ol' days

US did these missions but knew a fairly decent bit about radiation poisoning. Nobody was going
into the epicenter of these blasts, but they were being trained close by, as the footage
demonstrates. Army needed to know how or if ground troops could fight in proximity to nuclear
blasts during the cold war. Everyone already knew that walking into the epicenter would likely
kill you in a few minutes to hours based on the radiation dose.
Many of them did eventually get cancer years later, the long term effects wee what was unknown.
There are still many American solders alive now who took part in the tests.
