Virtually every infection with rabies resulted in death until two French scientists, Louis
Pasteur and Émile Roux, developed the first rabies vaccination in 1885. It was not as effective
as the modern ones and and people still had a high chance of dying. The modern one was created in
1967, clearly after that movie has been made.
Did I mention I'm fun at parties?

Both my brother and mother were bitten by a rabid fox that attacked them in our front yard
sometime in the 90's, I was around 8yrs old at the time.
My mom wasn't wearing her glasses and mistook it for a stray cat and tried to pet it, then
realized that it was a fox then tried to run.
She got bit on the leg, then it turned it's attention to my brother and bit him on the wrist.
Finally the little bastard decided to come after me but I had already scaled a small tree and
avoided contact. My neighbor had come outside to see what all the noise was about then spayed the
fucker with a hose.
It ran off into another neighbors yard and bit his dog, he then went inside to grab a baseball
bat and killed the fox.
Didn't find out it was rabid until animal control performed a biopsy on it's brain.
Glad I didn't get bit, this was back when they had to give you the injections in your stomach.

unfortunately he had just gotten that dog that very week and it did not yet have it's rabies
vaccination, so it had to be put down.

your neighbor is pretty boss if he can Spay a female fox from a distance with a garden hose.
That aside there was a treatment I read about in popular science or some magazine where they
managed to save someone.
Essentially rabies makes the brain fire off until you die because its so tired before the immune
system has a chance to fight it off.
So essentially what they did is put some girl in a coma before the virus did and kept her alive
with intravenous sustenance until her immune system fought it off by itself.
Was pretty neat.
