A girl that's your bro. In traditional chinese culture, you can make your friends into your
brothers and sisters, through a kind of bff ritual. They arent important as your actual family,
but they are more important than regular friends.
A gugu would be a brother, a meimei would be a sister. A xiao mei mei would be a little sister,
and in the context of a Confucius culture, the little sister would serve the older brothers by
doing manual tasks and being respectful to them while following them around. The brothers protect
the little sister and she helps them out through various misc tasks. Stuff like bringing you food
while you work, serving you tea, fixing your clothes. Not quite a wife, although its possible to
marry her if you both wanted that. Basically, a feminist nightmare.
Truly, having a xiao mei mei is a great thing.

This. After you endure through the initial three-five seconds of cringing in pain it actually
really gets to you.
And this reminds me, I did want to do the whole "brotherly blood binding" thing with my best
friend. I mean, I've already been the best man, this'll just make calling eachother brothers
actually make sense.

That is the literal meaning. But that isn't what it means contextually. The xiao mei mei
archetype is really common in chinese literature, especially wuxia. It's kinda like senpai and
kohai relationships in japanese stories, but the title is specific to women and more meaningful.
Close friends tend to call eachother sister or brother, and short titles can be added onto the
brother/sister prefix to make it more meaningful.
For example, if you are training martial arts together, you might call her your little sword
sister. Chinese is a tonal language, so depending on how you say mei mei, you could end up being
sweet or insulting. Just shouting out "hey mei mei" in the wrong tone could be construed as a cat
call, like saying "HEY BABY".
This is why chinese is hard for people who dont have tone variations in their native language,
and why chinese sounds like 'nong nong ching chong' to non-english speakers.
