actually, COAL can melt steel in the situation.
If you just get steel and throw fuel on it then no, it won't melt.
If you get steel, stick it in a furnace and apply liberal amounts of jet fuel then yes, you
should be able to melt steel as you're trapping the heat inside.

I'm not arguing one way or the other, but modern-day skyscrapers are built with tremendous
security margins.
If these buildings can survive huge earthquakes by fucking swaying around and looking like the
leaning tower of pisa for the entire duration of the shaking, and come out perfectly fine at the
end, then it wouldn't be far fetched to say that some large object taking out the fronts of a few
floors on the upper half of the skyscraper wouldn't cause it to topple over.
