It might be mainly that, but it's also about that in Islam there are rules regarding
portrayals/imitations of real creatures. The idea is that attempts of mere humans to copy God's
work is so poor that it is basically a mockery. This is why muslim regions have some amazing
geometrical/abstract art.
Though do remember that they are just being hardliners about that. After all majority of Muslims
are condemning their actions and calling them crazy.
Now I might be sporting the same headgear as you, but like with all religions, people cherry pick
their holy texts. Ones go with the bloodthirsty, savage passages while others go with peaceful,
civilized passages. In the end both are from the same book.
Let's just hope people pick the sensible parts.

The reason they are destroying these is because they are religious idols. In Islam, they are
forbidden and must be destroyed (haram). Now that being said, most of these work they are
destroying are plaster and stone duplicates, where the originals were removed in put in safe
haven in anticipation of ISIS arriving. Another thing of note is that they are primarily doing
this because they're young. Even though they are doing correctly by the letter of their law (I
don't know if it's required under Sharia or not, but it is encouraged by the Quran), they are
turning the people against them in the regions that they occupy by doing this. Even in Muslim
communities, those museums and artifacts are their economic lifeblood. Apparently some Al Al
Qaeda leaders have also been contacting them about their fuckups trying to steer them away from
such actions and do more to win the "hearts and minds" of the locals.
