It would seem you forgot one important thing: Psychopathy.
You forget that there are people (and this is not a rare thing, either) that genuinely enjoy the
grief and suffering of others. You forget that in this world of human beings that there are
certain human beings who do cruel things because they enjoy them. Either en masse or on
individual basis. They are often intelligent to simply vanish into society without ever standing
out. Some of them are your political leaders. Some of them are your next door neighbor. Most of
them keep their desires buried without ever acting on them for fear of either legal, religious,
or other repercussions unfavorable toward them. It never ceases to amaze me how often not just
you, but most moral atheists all seem to ignore this fact.

Understand this:
-Killing is fun
-Causing misery and suffering for others is fun
-some people need to be controlled (which is why religion is still necessary)
-The violent and greedy nature of humanity is why you will never be able to achieve your dream of
utopia.

This. Churches and their respective religions have played huge roles in morality and ethics in
history, and served to give us a basic moral code. Movements such as abolition and the
destruction of the caste system in India were promoted and led by largely religious figures (i.e.
Gandhi, John Brown).

I would hardly call religion necessary to the controlling of violent members of society. It may
have been at one point, but not so much any more.
For one thing, plenty of violence is committed by members of, and even in the name of, religions.
This level of effectiveness isn't exactly something to be proud of.
For another, the fear of becoming a social outcast or becoming imprisoned is a much stronger
deterrent to violence for most people in the modern age than the threat of some nebulous "hell"
they may or may not arrive at after their death.

And as far as the moral code goes, you've got it backwards. The moral structures found in
religion weren't imposed on an otherwise unruly populace; the populace created the religions in
the form of their existing moral structures.
The cases of religious rule being imposed on another populace is simply one populace extending
its own values over another, and is nothing to be lauded. It might as well be an invasion by
proxy.

Don't get me wrong, religion still has its purposes, mainly as a tool for finding meaning in an
otherwise meaningless existence. It's just not that great a tool for reducing violence.
