I tried giving this show a chance because I thought the Dooplissakurako video was cool, but when
I started watching the anime itself, it was hard to make it past the first episode.

Had the exact same thing with Yuyushiki.
Suffice it to say I dropped the anime, kept the me_lo_rin files.

The more and more anime I watch, the less and less I understand why shows like these are popular.

Because the character interactions in Yuru Yuri are actually pretty damn great. It's a humour
first, yuri second kind of deal, which means that it handles crushes and such in a very light
hearted manner. It's like constant comic relief, which is a nice change of pace from other shows'
drama and bullshit. The show never tries to hide the fact that middleschooler problems are not
really big problems, and presents them in a very self-aware manner.
Also, Yui is best girl.
