In the news recently there have been stories about adobe flash player being hacked or some shit,
and anywho now its unsafe. but without that plugin, I cant play the files here.
are there alternatives?

Shumway or Gnash, but they're both crappy and won't rather play anything from here. I recommend
just setting the Flash plug-in to on-click activation mode, so you can choose when you want it.
