How do we tease apart what's caused by Islam, and what might have just been some predisposing

Islam is at the core of peoples' lives, but they don't just believe Islam. Islam is maybe just a
vehicle for sentiments they might otherwise have for other reasons. Not to say Islam helps; not
only might some teachings in the texts might tend to be conducive to destructive interpretations,
perhaps if it weren't the single unifying force between all these disgruntled populations, then
they'd by more amenable to reform, whereas now they collectively support one anothers'
backwardness, making sure their partners in backwardness don't falter in their backwardness.

This reminds me of a story I read a while ago where according to polls a not-insignificant number
of Russian citizens believed that the US was responsible for shooting down Malaysian Airlines
Flight 17. It sounds preposterous but thinking about it you realize that it doesn't sound too
dissimilar from misconceptions about the 9/11 attacks. The belief system a person grows up in and
lives in shapes the way they see the world; it doesn't surprise that otherwise normal people in
countries like Indonesia or Bangladesh would support terrorism in prosperous far-away nations
when I consider the fact that I don't truly care what happens to people in poor far-away
countries.
(This isn't to say that Islam as a culture doesn't strike me particularly more warmongering than
others. Let's just say I'd rather be stuck in an elevator with a Hindu than a Muslim.)
