It's one of these years like 2008, 2010 and most recently 2011 (and even 2012) that people often
cite as the "breaking down" point when everything suddenly "went to shit".
My personal theory is that that the "4chan death year" is always just the earliest year in the
userbase's collective memory.

i see. personally i think 2011 as the year when internet suddenly became mainstream, almost over
night. that was the year i noticed everybody got on facebook all of a sudden and news stations on
TV started mentioning twitter and other internet stuff. before 2011 mainstream people mostly just
used internet every now and then for stuff like e-mail but then in 2011 everybody seemed to be
online. /f/ got a big boost in post count as well that year
